Match overview
World-champions Brazil opened France ’98 with a nervy 2-1 win. Sampaio’s early header settled the favourites, but Collins levelled from the spot before half-time. Scotland resisted bravely until Boyd’s unlucky own goal from Roberto Carlos’s low cross restored the Seleção’s lead and sealed the points.
Trivia
This was Brazil’s first competitive match without Romário since USA ’94. It was also Scotland’s only World-Cup meeting with the five-time champions, and the first World-Cup opener to feature an own goal.
