Argentina bounced back from their opening defeat with a 2-0 win over the Soviet Union in Naples. Troglio opened the scoring and Burruchaga sealed the result. USSR played much of the second half with ten men after Bezsonov’s red card.

This was Argentina’s third consecutive group-stage clean sheet under Bilardo. The match also marked the end of USSR’s hopes in the group, as Argentina’s tactical discipline and Maradona’s leadership proved decisive.
