Match overview

England continued their strong start with a 2-0 win over Czechoslovakia. After a goalless first half, Brooking broke the deadlock with a well-placed shot, and Mariner doubled the lead minutes later. England’s midfield dictated play, and Shilton was rarely troubled as England took control of the group. The English defence was solid throughout, and the team looked confident and organised.

Trivia

This was England’s second consecutive win without conceding a goal. The victory virtually assured them of progression to the next round. Trevor Brooking’s goal was his only strike at a World Cup finals.
