Match overview
Belgium controlled the match and took an early lead through Coeck’s precise finish. Despite dominating possession and territory, the Belgians were unable to extend their advantage, as El Salvador defended resolutely and looked to hit on the break. El Salvador, after their heavy defeat to Hungary, showed greater organisation and determination, but rarely threatened the Belgian goal.
Trivia
This was El Salvador’s best result at the 1982 World Cup, and the only match in which they avoided a heavy defeat. Belgium’s win put them in a strong position to qualify, and Coeck’s goal was his only strike at a World Cup finals.
