Match overview
The Netherlands advanced to the quarter-finals with a commanding 2-0 victory over a resilient Republic of Ireland. Bergkamp’s early opener and Jonk’s strike just before half-time settled the tie in Orlando’s sweltering heat. Ireland offered limited threat, and the hosts controlled proceedings under Advocaat’s guidance.
Trivia
Dennis Bergkamp became the first Dutch player to score in consecutive World Cups since 1988, while Ireland’s Jack Charlton side exited at the same stage for the second successive tournament.
