Match overview
West Germany dominated possession yet struggled to convert early pressure into goals. After the break Beckenbauer released Holzenbein down the left and the winger’s low cross was swept in by Heynckes. Bulgaria responded with two late substitutions but rarely threatened Maier, allowing the world champions to close out a professional win and finish unbeaten in the group.
Trivia
Heynckes’ finish was his final international goal; he retired from the national team the following year. The match was also the last competitive outing at the old Neckarstadion before major renovations began ahead of the 1977 Bundesliga season.
