Match overview
France edged a tense Bruges quarter-final. Zidane’s arcing free-kick opened the scoring before Mendieta’s spot-kick levelled matters. Djorkaeff restored the lead on the stroke of half-time and, though Barthez conceded a late penalty, Raúl fired high, allowing Les Bleus to reach the semis despite Spanish pressure.
Trivia
Didier Deschamps earned his 100th cap, becoming only the second Frenchman to reach that mark. Raúl’s missed penalty was the first he failed to convert in senior football and proved decisive; Spain exited without ever having beaten France in a competitive match.
