Match overview

Mexico began their home World Cup in style with a dominant 4-0 victory over El Salvador at the Azteca. After a goalless first half, Javier Valdivia scored twice in quick succession on either side of the break to break the deadlock. Fragoso and substitute Basaguren added further goals as Mexico delighted the huge crowd with an emphatic win.

Trivia

This match marked Mexico’s first ever World Cup win on home soil and set the tone for their group campaign. Juan Ignacio Basaguren’s goal made him the first substitute to score for Mexico in a World Cup. The attendance at the Azteca was among the highest of the tournament, and the match was played in warm, clear conditions. El Salvador, making their World Cup debut, struggled to contain the hosts but gained valuable experience on the global stage.
