Match overview

After the original match was abandoned due to rain, Liverpool dominated the replayed first leg of the UEFA Cup final. Kevin Keegan scored a brace and John Toshack added a third to give the Reds a commanding 3–0 win at Anfield.

The result gave Liverpool a strong lead heading into the second leg in Mönchengladbach.

Trivia

This was Liverpool’s first major European trophy final at Anfield. The decision to replay the match the next day was unusual but effective, allowing the full 90 minutes to be played under better conditions.
