The Netherlands stunned reigning world champions Italy with a convincing 3-0 win in their Euro 2008 opener. Goals by Van Nistelrooy, Sneijder (on his 24th birthday), and Van Bronckhorst sealed the victory. Italy had several chances but were denied by Van der Sar’s heroics.

This was Italy’s heaviest defeat in European Championship history. Sneijder became only the second player to score on his birthday in a Euro tournament. Van der Sar set a Dutch record with his 14th Euro match appearance.
