Match overview
Already eliminated, Russia struck twice inside 17 minutes, Kirichenko netting the tournament’s fastest goal after just 68 seconds. Greece halved the deficit through Vryzas but could not find an equaliser. Despite defeat, Rehhagel’s side squeezed into the quarter-finals on head-to-head record, a pivotal step on their improbable road to the title.
Trivia
Dmitri Kirichenko’s opener remains the quickest goal in European Championship history. Russia became the only team to beat eventual champions Greece at Euro 2004, and did so with a starting XI averaging just 25 years, their youngest in the competition’s finals.
