Match overview

In one of the most thrilling UEFA Cup matches of the decade, Tenerife overturned a 1–0 first-leg loss to eliminate Lazio with a dramatic 5–3 victory.

Despite Lazio scoring three times through Nedvěd, Fuser and Casiraghi, Tenerife’s relentless attack led by Juanele and Kodro secured qualification on aggregate.

The match is still remembered in the Canary Islands as a legendary night of European football and the birth of Tenerife’s continental legacy.

Trivia

This was the first time a Spanish club from the Canary Islands eliminated an Italian side in a major European competition.

Slavisa Jokanović would later go on to coach in both La Liga and the Premier League after a distinguished playing career.
