Match overview

Stoichkov struck after just three minutes, capitalising on a Belodedici slip, and the early blow proved decisive. Although Hagi’s side dominated possession, they were repeatedly denied by Mihailov, while Munteanu’s thunderbolt hit the bar. Bulgaria defended doggedly, survived Prodan’s late efforts and collected a vital win that ended Romania’s Euro ’96 campaign.

Trivia

This was Bulgaria’s only European Championship victory until 2004. Stoichkov’s goal meant he had scored in successive group games, ultimately finishing joint-top scorer at Euro ’96. The match also featured two captains for Bulgaria: Mihailov wore the armband at kick-off, but Stoichkov assumed it when the goalkeeper moved his gloves’ tape.
