Match overview
After a listless first half the Oranje accelerated. Cruyff, thriving in midfield, drilled low beyond Pascolo on 66 minutes for his maiden international goal, and Bergkamp settled matters when he followed up his own shot. Switzerland’s early pressing faded, their frustration reflected in four bookings, while Van der Sar thwarted Chapuisat’s best opening.
Trivia
Jordi Cruyff’s strike meant father and son had both scored for the Netherlands at European Championships, Johan having netted in 1976. Villa Park became the first English venue to stage competitive Dutch victories in successive tournaments, following their 3-1 win over the Republic of Ireland at USA ’94 two years earlier.
