Match overview

Despite losing captain Kohler after 14 minutes, Germany overran the Czechs with sweeping attacks down the left, Ziege rifling home before Möller’s solo surge doubled the lead. Vogts’ side then managed the game expertly, Köpke largely untroubled as the future finalists toiled, and Germany staked an early claim as title favourites.

Trivia

Germany’s victory was their first at a European Championship since the 1980 final, ending a six-game winless run in the competition. Substitute Oliver Bierhoff’s late cameo foreshadowed his extra-time heroics against the same opponents three weeks later, while Matthias Sammer began a run to the tournament’s inaugural Player of the Tournament award.
