Match overview

Cameroon’s slick passing gave them a deserved half-time lead through Mboma’s close-range finish. Ireland regrouped, and Matt Holland’s 20-metre drive levelled matters soon after the restart. The African champions faded late on, yet stout defending ensured the sides shared the points in an entertaining Group E opener.

Trivia

This was Cameroon’s third successive World Cup finals draw on Japanese soil, following stalemates against England and Sweden at the 2001 Confederations Cup. For Ireland, Matt Holland became only the nation’s fourth World Cup goalscorer.
