Paraguay booked their place in the knockout rounds with a 3-1 victory over Slovenia. Cuevas’s first-half injury-time strike put the South Americans ahead before Pavlin briefly levelled the contest. Paraguay restored their advantage through Cuevas again and sealed the win when Quintana fired home late on. Slovenia created few clear chances and exit the tournament with no points.

Nelson Cuevas became Paraguay’s top scorer of the group stage with three goals. Srečko Katanec’s side suffered their third successive World Cup group-stage defeat.
