Match overview

Argentina claimed their first World Cup triumph with a dramatic 3-1 victory over the Netherlands after extra time at the Monumental in Buenos Aires. Mario Kempes scored twice, including the opener and the decisive second goal in extra time, whilst Dick Nanninga’s powerful header eight minutes from time had briefly raised Dutch hopes. Daniel Bertoni sealed the victory five minutes from the end of extra time to spark jubilant celebrations throughout the host nation.

Trivia

This final marked the second consecutive World Cup final defeat for the Netherlands, having lost to West Germany in 1974. Mario Kempes finished as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals and was named man of the match. The match was notable for pre-game controversies including questions over René van de Kerkhof’s plaster cast, and the Netherlands refused to attend the post-match ceremony after their defeat.
