Match overview
Tactical caution dominated until Kolo Muani’s late surge forced Vertonghen to divert into his own net. France’s midfield trio smothered De Bruyne, while Maignan dealt comfortably with Belgium’s limited threat. Les Bleus advanced despite still not scoring from open play themselves at Euro 2024.
Trivia
Vertonghen, at thirty-seven, became the oldest player to score an own goal at a European Championship. France progressed to their fifth consecutive major-tournament quarter-final with a record of two own goals and one penalty, none from open play.
