Switzerland out-thought the holders, Freuler steering in Xhaka’s pass before Vargas curled a stunning strike seconds after the restart. Italy’s reshuffle produced little penetration and Sommer was seldom tested as the Nati recorded their first competitive victory over the Azzurri in more than three decades.
Trivia
Vargas’s goal, after just 27 seconds of the second half, was the quickest post-interval strike at a Euro since 2004. Switzerland had not beaten Italy since 1993 and had never previously won a Euro knockout tie inside ninety minutes.
