Borussia Mönchengladbach overwhelmed Real Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Cup Round of 16 with a 5–1 win. Uwe Rahn scored twice and Ewald Lienen sealed the result late in the game. Despite the impressive scoreline, Real Madrid would later complete an extraordinary comeback in the return leg.
Real Madrid’s only goal came from Rafael Gordillo, who was later sent off. The Spanish side struggled to cope with the German pace and pressing.
