Match overview
Yugoslavia secured their place in the knockout rounds with a narrow 1-0 victory over the United States in Nantes. Slobodan Komljenovic’s early goal after just three minutes proved decisive, as the Americans struggled to create clear chances throughout the match. The defeat eliminated the USA from the tournament with no points from three games.
Trivia
This victory completed Yugoslavia’s group stage campaign with seven points, securing second place behind Germany. Komljenovic’s early strike was one of the fastest goals scored in the 1998 World Cup, effectively ending American hopes of advancing to the Round of 16 for the first time since 1930.
