West Germany bounced back from their opening defeat with a convincing 4-1 win over Chile. Fischer and Breitner put the Germans in control early, and Rummenigge added two more after the break. Chile managed a consolation through Caszely, but West Germany’s superiority was never in doubt. The Germans’ attacking play was fluid and effective, and they looked much improved from their first match.
Trivia
Rummenigge’s brace highlighted his importance to the German attack. This win restored confidence in the West German camp after the shock loss to Algeria. Chile’s defeat left them on the brink of elimination.
