Algeria produced one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history by defeating West Germany 2-1 in their first ever finals match. After a goalless first half, Madjer gave Algeria the lead with a composed finish. Rummenigge equalised for the Germans, but within a minute Belloumi restored Algeria’s advantage. The North Africans defended bravely in the closing stages to hold on for a famous win, sending shockwaves through the football world.
Trivia
