Match overview
Poland produced a stunning attacking display to overwhelm Peru and secure their place in the next round. After a tight first half, Szarmach broke the deadlock, and Poland scored four more in a devastating 20-minute spell. Peru’s defence collapsed under the pressure, and only a late goal from La Rosa avoided a shutout. Poland’s combination play and finishing were among the best seen in the group stage.
Trivia
Poland’s five goals in the second half equalled a World Cup record for most goals scored by one team in a half. Smolarek’s brace capped a memorable night, and Poland advanced as group winners, while Peru exited the tournament without a win.
