Papa Bouba Diop’s scruffy close-range finish midway through the first half gave the debutants the lead and, despite mounting pressure, Fabien Barthez, the woodwork and resolute defending denied France an equaliser.
Trivia
Diop’s goal was the first of the 2002 finals and made Senegal only the second African side to beat a reigning champion, echoing Cameroon’s upset of Argentina in 1990. His shirt-dancing celebration became one of the tournament’s enduring images.
