Match overview
Spain claimed their first major international trophy with a thrilling 2-1 victory over defending champions USSR at the Santiago Bernabéu. After an explosive opening that saw both teams score within the first eight minutes through Pereda and Khusainov, the match remained level until seven minutes from time when Marcelino headed home the winner to spark jubilant scenes in Madrid.
Trivia
This final made Spain the second nation to win the European Championship, following the Soviet Union’s triumph in 1960. The match was attended by Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, who had previously refused to let Spain travel to Moscow in 1960. Luis Suárez created both Spanish goals with crosses from the right wing, establishing a pattern that defined Spain’s attacking play throughout the tournament.
