Match overview
Already top of the group, West Germany rested key men and produced a subdued display against a reshuffled Greece. Chances were scarce: Hrubesch and Rummenigge headed wide for the holders, while Ardizoglou struck a post with twenty minutes left. A goalless stalemate proved sufficient for Derwall’s side to reach the final, ending Greece’s first Euro adventure.
Trivia
The match remains Greece’s only clean sheet at a European Championship until their shock 2004 triumph. For West Germany it was the first Euro fixture in which they failed to score since the 1976 final, yet the draw preserved an unbeaten tournament run that stretched to seven games.
