Match overview
West Germany edged past defending champions Czechoslovakia in the opening match of Group A in Rome. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge’s header just before the hour mark proved decisive in a match where the Germans fielded an entirely new lineup from their 1976 European Championship final defeat to the same opponents.
Trivia
This was a repeat of the 1976 European Championship final, which Czechoslovakia had won on penalties. West Germany’s victory marked the beginning of their successful campaign that would lead them to their second European title.
