In a pulsating rematch of the 1974 World Cup final, Matthäus’s penalty gave the hosts the lead, but Koeman levelled from the spot after van Basten was felled. With extra time looming, Rijkaard’s through-ball found van Basten, who slid home to silence Hamburg and send the Dutch to their first European final.
Trivia
Koeman’s shirt-waving celebration in front of German fans became one of Euro folklore’s most iconic images. West Germany suffered their first competitive defeat on home soil since 1967.
