Match overview

The hosts secured top spot in Group 1 thanks to a Völler brace. His first, a diving header from Brehme’s cross, settled early nerves; the second, bundled in after Zubizarreta’s save, suffocated Spanish hopes. West Germany’s diligent pressing frustrated La Roja, while Immel’s late stop from Salinas preserved a deserved clean sheet.

Trivia

Völler became the first West German to score twice in a European-Championship match since Gerd Müller in 1972. Michel Vautrot brandished five yellow cards yet never reached for red throughout the entire tournament. This fixture was also the 100th international coached by Franz Beckenbauer, who had taken charge only four years earlier.
