Match overview
Scotland stunned Brazil with a superb strike from Narey, but Brazil responded with a display of attacking brilliance. Zico equalised with a free kick, and after the break, Oscar headed Brazil in front before Éder and Falcão added further goals. Brazil’s second-half performance was a masterclass in movement and creativity, overwhelming the Scottish defence and delighting the Seville crowd. Scotland faded as the match wore on, unable to cope with Brazil’s relentless attacking play.
Trivia
Narey’s goal was Scotland’s only lead against Brazil in World Cup history. Brazil’s four goals showcased the attacking flair of the 1982 side, considered one of the most entertaining teams never to win the World Cup. The match is often remembered for the phrase “toe poke” used by BBC commentator David Coleman to describe Narey’s goal.
