A pulsating semi-final swung repeatedly before France prevailed. Domergue’s first-half free-kick was cancelled out by Jordão, who then headed Portugal in front early in extra-time. Domergue rifled home again before Platini converted Tigana’s low cross with seconds remaining, sparking delirium in Marseille and sending the hosts to their first European final.
Trivia
Domergue had never scored for France prior to the tournament but finished Euro ’84 with three goals, all from left-back. Platini’s winner was his eighth of the finals and ensured he matched the record for goals in a single major-tournament edition, later surpassed only by Cristiano Ronaldo in 2021.
