Match overview
Republic of Ireland started brightly and were rewarded when Ronnie Whelan’s looping volley put them ahead just before the interval. The Soviets gradually imposed their rhythm and Oleg Protasov levelled from close range midway through the second half. Both sides pressed late on, but Pat Bonner and substitute Viktor Chanov preserved a share of the spoils.
Trivia
Whelan’s spectacular strike remains one of Ireland’s most celebrated European-Championship goals. Jack Charlton’s team extended their unbeaten run to seven competitive games, while the Soviet comeback ensured they would finish the group stage undefeated. Chanov’s entry for Dasayev was one of the very rare occasions the legendary keeper was replaced in a major finals.
