Bernd Schuster was instrumental, setting up all three German goals with his pace and skill. The Dutch fought back bravely in the final stages with a penalty and Van der Kerkhof’s superb strike but couldn’t prevent German progress.

This was Klaus Allofs’ only international hat-trick and made him the tournament’s top scorer with three goals. At nineteen, Lothar Matthäus won his first cap as a substitute, beginning what would become a world record 150 international appearances. Bernd Schuster’s dynamic performance announced him as one of European football’s brightest talents.
