Match overview

Czechoslovakia claimed their first European Championship with a dramatic victory over defending champions West Germany. After taking a 2-0 lead through Švehlík and Dobiaš, the underdogs saw their advantage reduced when Müller replied quickly. Hölzenbein’s last-minute header forced extra time and the first-ever penalty shootout in a major international final, where Panenka’s audacious chip secured immortality.

Trivia

This final marked the birth of the “Panenka” penalty, named after Antonín Panenka’s cheeky chip down the middle that deceived Sepp Maier. The decision to settle the match with penalties instead of a replay was made just hours before kickoff at West Germany’s request, as their players had already booked summer holidays. The tournament was unique as three of the four participating nations no longer exist today.
