The USSR advanced to the semi-finals of the 1966 World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Hungary at Roker Park. Early goals from Chislenko and Porkujan gave the Soviets a commanding lead, and although Bene pulled one back for Hungary, the USSR held on for the win.
Trivia
Valeri Porkujan scored in his second consecutive World Cup match, confirming his status as a breakout player of the tournament. The Soviet defence, marshalled by Lev Yashin, withstood Hungary’s pressure in the second half to secure a place among the final four.
