Match overview
Portugal struck first through Nuno Gomes, but Henry spun to equalise soon after half-time. A fiercely contested extra-time loomed towards penalties until Xavier handled Wiltord’s shot three minutes from the end. Zidane converted the golden-goal penalty, sending the reigning world champions into a second successive major final.
Trivia
Deschamps captained France for the 50th time on the night he joined FIFA’s century club. Zidane’s strike was the last golden goal scored in any senior men’s Euro finals, and Nuno Gomes’s late red card was Portugal’s first dismissal at a European Championship.
