Spain dominated possession and were rewarded when Raúl teed up Fernando Morientes to drill the opener. Greece, tirelessly disciplined, survived further scares and struck back through Angelos Charisteas, who coolly converted Vassilios Tsiartas’s raking pass. The draw left both nations on four points in the fiercely contested Group A.
Trivia
Morientes’s goal made him the first Spaniard to score at three different European Championship finals. Greece became only the second team in the tournament to avoid defeat after conceding first to Spain-the previous was Portugal in 1984.
