Spain recovered from an early own goal to defeat Paraguay in an entertaining encounter. After Puyol’s unfortunate deflection gave Paraguay the lead, second-half substitute Morientes scored twice to put Spain ahead. Hierro’s late penalty sealed the victory and ensured Spain’s place in the knockout stages.

Fernando Morientes became the first substitute to score twice in a World Cup match for Spain. The match was played at the World Cup Stadium in Jeonju, which was specially built for the tournament and could hold 42,477 spectators.
