Match overview

A see-saw Group A contest swung Denmark’s way when Tomasson struck in first-half stoppage time. Rodriguez levelled instantly after the interval with a thumping volley, but the Danes’ superior fitness told late on, Tomasson sliding home the winner to secure an invaluable three points.

Trivia

Tomasson’s brace meant he became the first Dane to score twice in a World Cup match since Preben Elkjær in 1986. Uruguay’s goal was their first in the finals for 12 years, ending a drought dating back to Italia ’90.
