Despite being reduced to ten men after Zambrotta’s dismissal and facing two missed Dutch penalties in normal time, Italy clung on through 120 goalless minutes. In the shoot-out Di Biagio, Pessotto and Totti scored while De Boer, Stam and Bosvelt failed, Francesco Toldo’s heroics earning the Azzurri a 3-1 victory.
