Match overview
With elimination already confirmed, the Czechs salvaged pride as Šmicer’s rapid brace consigned Denmark to a fruitless, goalless campaign. The Danes dominated early possession but lacked penetration; once the Czech midfield found Poborský’s supply line, Šmicer twice punished Schmeichel to seal third place in Group D.
Trivia
Peter Schmeichel equalled the EURO finals appearance record (13) in what proved his final match at the tournament. Bo Johansson ended his eight-year reign as Denmark coach that night, succeeded shortly afterwards by Morten Olsen.
