Match overview
Romania came from behind twice to snatch a dramatic late win and progress at England’s expense. Chivu’s mis-hit cross opened the scoring, but Shearer’s penalty and Owen’s solo effort turned the match. Munteanu’s volley levelled and, two minutes from time, Ganea’s nerveless spot-kick completed the turnaround.
Trivia
Phil Neville’s fateful challenge that conceded the decisive penalty was later voted England’s costliest EURO mistake. Romania, missing the suspended Gheorghe Hagi, nevertheless reached the quarter-finals for only the second time in their history.
