Match overview
England raced two up inside 18 minutes, but Figo’s thunderbolt halved the deficit and João Pinto’s diving header levelled before the break. Rui Costa’s artistry split England again, allowing Nuno Gomes to rifle the winner. Portugal’s comeback, sealed despite late pressure from Shearer, became an instant tournament classic.
Trivia
Luís Figo’s goal was voted UEFA’s “Goal of the Tournament”. It also marked the first competitive match in which England surrendered a two-goal lead and lost since 1950 (versus USA in the World Cup).
