Match overview

Chile dominated early passages and deservedly led through Sierra’s well-placed header, yet Cameroon responded with Mboma’s close-range finish. Two red cards for the Indomitable Lions forced them to hang on for a point; Chile’s profligacy in front of goal ultimately cost them a first-round victory.

Trivia

Cameroon became the first team to collect two red cards in a single match at France ’98. Lauren’s dismissal was particularly infamous, coming just six minutes after his introduction and ensuring Chile advanced despite drawing all three group fixtures.
