Vlaovic’s winner came just six months after brain-clot surgery, making him the only player to score at a European Championship following such an operation. Croatia’s victory ensured all four Euro ’96 groups opened with at least one decisive result, while Turkey became the first side since 1968 to lose debut finals games without scoring.
