Birmingham vibrated to tartan pipes and orange trumpets but neither side could locate a finish. Bergkamp and Seedorf spurned the best Dutch openings, while Scotland’s cautious 3-5-2 rarely troubled van der Sar. Craig Brown’s men took heart from a precious point; Hiddink lamented profligacy that left Group A finely balanced.
Trivia
This remains the only European Championship match featuring two sets of supporters playing bagpipes and brass sections throughout. Edwin van der Sar kept his third successive clean sheet for the Oranje, a national finals record later surpassed only by Maarten Stekelenburg in 2010. Scotland, meanwhile, recorded their first tournament shut-out since 1982.
