Jacquet’s disciplined diamond midfield stifled Hagi’s creativity, and Lama’s only real scare came when Popescu’s through-ball almost released Moldovan. The slender win nevertheless positioned Les Bleus atop a competitive Group B.
Trivia
It was France’s first victory at a European Championship finals since the 1984 triumph, ending a 12-year wait. Christophe Dugarry scored with his only tournament shot on target, while future World Cup-winning captain Deschamps became the first Frenchman to wear the armband at both a European Championship and a World Cup.
