Match overview
The Soviet Union defeated El Salvador 2-0 at the Estadio Azteca to secure their place in the quarter-finals as Group 1 winners. Both goals came from Anatoliy Byshovets, who opened the scoring in the 51st minute and doubled the lead in the 74th minute. The USSR controlled the match throughout, with El Salvador unable to mount any serious threat against the well-organized Soviet defence. Both teams made substitutions in the later stages, but the result was never in doubt once Byshovets scored his first goal.
Trivia
This victory completed a perfect group stage for the Soviet Union, who won all three of their matches without conceding a goal. Anatoliy Byshovets emerged as one of the tournament’s top scorers with his brace against El Salvador. The match marked the end of El Salvador’s first and only World Cup campaign, during which they failed to score a single goal in three matches.
